Authentic Amish Craftsmanship Since 1999

Online Amish Furniture is a Michigan-based online retailer specializing in authentic, American-made Amish furniture handcrafted from solid hardwood. We work with skilled Amish furniture builders to offer custom, made-to-order furniture for dining rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, home offices, and other spaces throughout the home.

Our story, however, began a few years before Online Amish Furniture was formally established.

How Our Story Began

In late 1997, one of our founders was shopping for a dining room set and became frustrated with the quality of furniture available at many big-box stores. Much of what he found relied on engineered wood and other wood substitutes rather than the solid hardwood construction he wanted.

His search for something better led him to the Amish furniture-making communities around Shipshewana and Goshen, Indiana.

There, he discovered skilled craftsmen building furniture from solid hardwood using time-tested woodworking and construction methods. He purchased an Amish-made dining set and brought it home to Michigan.

The quality immediately attracted attention. Friends and dinner guests regularly complimented the furniture and asked where they could purchase something similar. That response revealed an opportunity to bring handcrafted Amish furniture to customers in Southeast Michigan.

Building Relationships With Amish Craftsmen

He partnered with a fellow automotive engineer, and together they spent many weekends traveling through the back roads of Shipshewana and Goshen, Indiana, and Amish communities around Millersburg, Ohio.

Rather than simply purchasing furniture through distributors, they developed direct relationships with the craftsmen and workshops building it.

Those early trips resulted in relationships with approximately 80 Amish furniture builders.

In August 1998, we opened our first brick-and-mortar furniture store in Southeast Michigan. Customer response was immediate, and the store expanded within its first year.

Online Amish Furniture LLC was established in 1999, creating the foundation for the company that continues today.

As our business grew through customer referrals and local media attention, our network of Amish furniture builders grew with it. What began with approximately 80 builders eventually expanded to relationships with more than 180 Amish furniture partners in Indiana and Ohio.

We continually expanded our furniture selection while giving customers more choices in hardwood species, stains, finishes, sizes, styles, and custom configurations.

After approximately a year of development, OnlineAmishFurniture.com launched in 2004, allowing customers throughout the United States and Canada to purchase authentic Amish-made furniture online.

The response was remarkable. Within two years, our nationwide online sales had surpassed sales from our Michigan retail location.

In 2006, we sold the brick-and-mortar store and dedicated our efforts entirely to OnlineAmishFurniture.com.

Today, Online Amish Furniture specializes in handcrafted, made-to-order Amish furniture built in the United States by skilled craftsmen.

Our furniture is made primarily from North American hardwoods such as oak, maple, cherry, hickory, quarter-sawn white oak, and walnut. Depending on the piece, customers can choose from numerous wood species, stains, finishes, dimensions, hardware, and other customization options.

Traditional woodworking techniques, solid hardwood construction, and careful craftsmanship allow us to offer furniture designed for long-term use rather than short-term replacement.

Our collection includes handcrafted furniture for nearly every room of the home, including:

One of the greatest advantages of Amish-made furniture is the ability to make it your own.

Many of our pieces can be customized by selecting the wood species, stain or finish, dimensions, hardware, table leaves, upholstery, and other available options. Because much of our furniture is built after it is ordered, customers aren't limited to the handful of finishes and configurations typically available with mass-produced furniture.

What began as a search for one well-made dining room set has grown into an online furniture business serving customers throughout the United States and beyond.

Since transitioning to e-commerce, Online Amish Furniture has shipped handcrafted furniture to customers in all 50 states, throughout Canada, and to customers in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and other international destinations.
