The queen, and perhaps other sizes, comes 4 inches longer than customary

The bed that I received is a beautiful, very well-made piece of furniture, professionally delivered.

But...the opening for the mattress is 4 inches longer than customary. I was informed that this is by design. So I have a 4" gap between the mattress that I retained from the previous bed and this bed's footboard. I intend to shorten the rails in order to regain 4" of my bedroom floor space and to eliminate the gap.
